Late Mrs. Piloo Dorab Khambatta award

Every year, on the 14th of March, NAB presents three awards under the Employment category as an honor to the Mrs. P. D. Khambatta. The awards for the Best Employer of the Blind, Best Blind Employee, Best Self-Employed Blind Entrepreneur are an incentive for the blind to progress in their professional life. At the same time it is an encouragement for prospective employers to contribute to a social cause. The Award consists of a Cash Prize of Rs. 2,000/- and a Citation for the categories of Best Blind Employee and Self-Employed Blind Entrepreneur, while the Award for the Best Employer of the Blind, consists of a Shield and a Citation.

Application for the award:
The Secretary of the NAB-Rehabilitation, Training and Employment Committee invites nominations from all over the country by giving the widest possible publicity on an All India basis through circulars and news items. Applications for the Award are received from various Private/ Public Sector undertakings, Government organisations, and Institutions working for the Welfare of the Disabled in India.

The Best Employer of the Blind
This category honors an organisation, company or institution that has provided employment to the maximum number of blind persons, within the period under scrutiny. NAB is proud to honor the STATE BANK OF INDIA, Mumbai for the same for providing employment to 8 blind persons

The Best Blind Employee
This category honors a blind employee person who has made an outstanding contribution at work or has brought out progressive changes in the in the working environment through his project executing skills. NAB is proud to present Prof. Shyam Mahadeo Sayanekar Head Of Dept., (history & f.c.) K. V.Pendharkar College, Dombivli the award for the year 2001, for the same.

The Best Self-Employed Blind Entrepreneur
This category honors a self-employed blind person who has contributed significantly in a different area of work or has conducted his business in a noticeable or significant manner and thus has set an example to other visually challenged individuals. For the year 2001, MR. DIVYANSHU N. GANATRA BLIND ENTREPRENEUR OWNER, ‘COMPULINK’, PUNE (COMPUTER & TRAVEL AGENCY was the proud winner.

Mrs. Piloo Dorab Khambatta - An Insight
A philanthropist at heart, Mrs. Khambatta was the Hon. Secretary of N.A.B. with tremendous initiative. During her tenure she served varying departments of NAB in varying capacities.

Accomplishments:

  • Set up Placement Services and as Manager for the same she implemented it successfully in 12 states
  • She also represented India at the East Berlin Conference of the World Council for the Welfare of the Blind on Rehabilitation & Employment in 1972
  • Started the Neelum Khurshed Kanga Fund for the Blind Ladies along with Mrs. Nergesh A. Palkhivala. Today, thanks to their intitiative, the NAB-Committee on Advancement of Status of Blind Women has been successful in providing financial assistance to needy and deserving blind ladies.
  • In the early stages of her tenure, she was responsible for placing over 200 visually handicapped persons in Cotton/ Synthetic Textile Mills in Bombay.
  • As a conscientious and dedicated Voluntary Worker she helped to solve varying problems of blind individuals
  • She organized productive Seminars and Developmental Training courses for the Blind.

A Natural Winner of:

  • Rustom Merwanji Alpaiwalla Memorial Award instituted by National Association for the Blind for meritorious services rendered in the cause of the visually handicapped and in particular for Employment and Placement work.
  • The N.D. Diwan Memorial Award instituted by National Society for Equal Opportunities for the Handicapped (NASEOH) also for the yeomanry services rendered by her towards the cause of blind persons and for their socio-economic rehabilitation.
  • The Indian Merchants Chambers Award for outstanding contribution in the field of Employment of handicapped persons, and development and training of their skills for employment in the cotton/ synthetic textile industry. She was nominated for the Award under Arvind Mills Ltd., Endowment Award Scheme.
