Road to Self-Dependance: Rehabilitation Center for Blind Mt. Abu

The challenges of daily life have propelled the need for every individual to achieve self-dependance, irrespective of their physical, mental and financial circumstances. While, for most of us self-dependance equals financial independnce to a large extent, millions of Indians live in warrens due to physical handicap and lack of cognizance by the surrounding population. The NAB-Pheroze & Noshir Rehabilitation Centre For The Blind, based in Mount Abu offers a helping hand to equip the blind with the necessary ingredients for an independant living.

The rehabilitation programme imparts training for vocational and professional professions in addition to basic education. Once an individual is admitted at the centre the trainers provide customised programs on a need basis. Every porgram lasts a minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 18 months. Within this period every individual is given Rs. 40/- to compensate for the absence of income.

Admission
The centre admits blind individuals between the ages of 10-40 without geographical barriers. Admission is granted after a mandatory interview with the individual concerned, in the foloowing order of preference.

  • Blind individuals who have lost sight in an advanced age
  • Adult blind individuals who have had no privilege with any rehabilitation centre
  • Adult blind individuals who do not belong to the above two categories.

The centre imparts education and training in the following areas:

Orientation & Mobility:
Individuals built their motor and sensory skills to high efficiency levels in order to cope with daily outdoor and indooor activites without adeptness.

Home Economics & Daily Life
Residents are taught the essential tasks of house managament and social etiquette.

Handicrafts
Rehabilitation trainees learn and hone skills in knitting, making bags, doormats, Sewing and Woodwork so as build a vocational career.

Braille & Skills of Communication
Students are imparted with public relations skills and basic communication abilites by placing them in real life situations of having business telephonic conversations and typing respectively.

Light Engineeering
According to the trainees' aptitude he/she would receive education in working with tools and machines like the drill, flypress, grinders thus acquiring proficieny in handling complex jobs.

Agriculture & Allied Pursuits
In this program they learn important farming and agricultural tasks

Physical Education and Corrective Therapy
Students brace themselves in body and muscle exercises.

In short, trainees polish and learn new skills that enhance their personality while making them self-sufficient.
